The Carnival Bandleaders Association of Washington, DC, is a community-based non-profit organization formed in 1993 by a group of individuals from Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Thomas, VI, and Jamaica. The membership has a committed passion to share the culture of the Caribbean with the residents of the Washington, DC metropolis. The current membership of the CBLA represents the following organizations: Panmasters, Caribe, Garage Boyz, Roots & Culture Promotions, Shortmus Productions, Ice Carnival, De Island Masqueraders, Panisha, Basement Knok’ers, Family & Friends, Spice Revellers, Caribbean Cartel, Vice Carnival, and Vibes Carnival. The leaders of these bands strongly support the Washington, DC Caribbean Carnival which is staged annually in June and are the fundamental elements to the success of the DC Caribbean Festival. The centerpiece of this festival is a carnival parade along the Georgia Avenue, NW corridor when more than 5,000 colorful costumed masqueraders dance and celebrate the beauty and splendor of the Caribbean Carnival. They are accompanied by the pulsating beat of the calypso, soca, reggae and steel band music. These costumes, like the music, are always new each year and represent different themes that are conceptualized by the bandleaders, designers and costume makers.
